Restoration and new development in the context of listed buildings and gardens

Detailed designs were prepared on behalf of Swan Country Homes for the conversion and redevelopment of Oldway Mansion in Paignton, Devon comprising:

The Mansion

With Grade II* listed status, this building would retain its grandeur with a 4 star hotel, function and conference room facility, registry office, café, restaurant and associated shops.  The restoration of the building was to encompass  the retained Singer museum and good public access so that everyone can appreciate the building in its full glory.

The Rotunda and Banqueting Hall

The Rotunda will house a café, reception and interpretation centre, and arts centre.  The Banqueting Hall would be home to a gymnasium, swimming pool and treatment rooms, to be used by hotel guests and those with membership.  On the first floor there will be apartments and hotel rooms.

Public access to the grounds

Existing public access to the grounds is an important resource for the local and wider community, and it will be retained.  A programme to restore the grounds would be instigated, with great care taken to ensure that they retain their essential charm and historic character.

The residential development

Sensitive development of part of the grounds was proposed for mixed tenure housing.  The homes would be constructed using modern methods including low carbon-using renewable resources.  A playgroup, a community rooms for tenants, and live-work spaces were also included.
